Stimulating, inspirational... the Writing for Games & Interactive Narrative event
Thursday, 10 November 2016
On Tonight! One night only!|!!Writing Games & Interactive Narrative Event in Maynooth
Having worked on a number of games & apps, the first full narrative I designed for a role playing game (RPG) was Grief, which is still in development. I really connected with the really interesting concept but as a writer who loves creating character and story, this was also an opportunity to design 7-9 HOURS of story!! What's not to like about that!?
So, as Screenwriter in Residence at Maynooth Uni and Kildare Co. Council Library & Arts Services, I'm running a free event with the Media Studies Department at Maynooth University next Weds evening (November 16th). There's a great line up of speakers - Devin Doyle, Charlene Putney & Chris Gregan - and, as a writer who has worked in games, it is a whole new exciting world. You don't even have to be a 'gamer' to end up writing for them, as Devin and I would admit!
It's in the NIRSA Seminar room (2.31), Second Floor, Iontas Building - that's in the North Campus - from 6-8 on the 16th.
Hope to see some of you there! (PS There's a direct train to Maynooth from Connolly & Drumcondra stations and regular busses from the quays.)

PUNKY now on Hopster...
Thrilled to announce that PUNKY is now available on Hopster, the most downloaded TV App for Children - and one that is ad-free, which has to be a bonus coming up to Christmas! That means you can get the series on your Apple TV box too, which is handy.
Last year, PUNKY was taken up by Sweden and Brazil, the latest country this year was Portugal. It's a really nice feeling to know that it is now all over the world, from South Korea to New Zealand, from Turkey to Denmark.
You can check it out on Hopster here.
Thixs is how they have introduced it to their audience on the Hopster Facebook page: "New show alert. 😊 Punky is a beautiful show about a little girl with Down Syndrome. We love it because it teaches kids the value of family and that it's great that everyone's different.

Public Readings in Maynooth Uni: 26 October
Next Wednesday, October 26th @ 6pm myself - as Screenwriter in Residence - and Joanna Walsh - as Writer in Residence - are reading from our work at a public event in the Seminar Room in the Iontas building of Maynooth University!
I'll be reading from ongoing work for only the second time in my life! Normally as the screenwriter, you get to hide behind actors but not this time! Thrilled, excited, possibly won't be nervous until the day!
This is the official introduction by the Department of English of our residencies, posts jointly funded by Maynooth Uni and Kildare Co. Council Library & Arts Service. It's a wonderful opportunity to be both part of the university and the larger community and I feel chuffed and humbled to have been chosen.
I started workshops on campus two weeks ago. Great students, some great ideas and energies in the room. I'm looking forward to getting to know them and their work better in the weeks to come. It so enjoyable to be part of the University! I can already feel that the time will go too quickly!
I will be organising a number of public evening events during my Residency. The first is on Nov 16th from 6-8pm. Three great speakers and doers lined up on the subject and reality of writing narrative for games and interactive fiction. Keep the date free!!
AFTER THE EVENT....
It was such a blast reading from my work - first time ever! Especially after showing my brand new showreel, made for me by Donogh MacCarthy Morrogh of StormLight Productions. To show snippets of film/TV, theatre and animation but then to read from two books.... it was an absolute buzz!!! Can't wait to read again.
Joanna Walsh read from her collection Vertigo, a powerful story of depth and subtlety. I was glad I'd got up there first!

Limerick School of Art and Design
My first ever masterclass in Limerick was a week ago on October 10th in the Limerick School of Art and Design. Enjoyed every moment, apart, perhaps, from the part at the start when I started! It's funny, no matter how prepared or experienced you are, the first moments with a large new group can feel too fast or too slow!
It was a great experience, the whole day; especially spending time in one-to-one's with each of the final year students talking to them about their final year assignments - animation, motion capture, model-making... all sort of ideas, designs, themes, hopes, issues, structures, forms of storytelling.
The stimulation of being in a room where so much is being imagined and created, was wonderful.

My new gig: Screenwriter-in-Residence
Thrilled to have been appointed Screenwriter-in-Residence at Maynooth Uni and Kildare County Council Library & Arts Service 2016-17. What a fantastic excuse to buy nice new pens and notebooks, to hatch workshops and event ideas, to focus on some new personal writing projects with the space and time to bring them through to the next stage...
A whole new world is opening up and I can't wait to leap in!
Looking forward too to meeting my fellow Resident, Joanna Walsh, the Writer-in-Residence.

Scenes From... a new script, a new world coming to life!
This is where it began - the first little chaos of pages, filled with notes, scribblings, snatches of dialogue, character, theme and mad little scratchings that might yield something of which I didn't yet understand the value.
Screenwriting.
Any form of creative writing.
It's a mad business altogether.
You can't lay down rules beyond deadlines or aspirational goals - as in, "I want this to be the most amazing script EVER" or "I want this sequence of scenes to blow the reader and then the viewer out of the water with emotions they haven't felt in years!"
Yep. Might as well be ambitious. It's why we write. To move people. To make them moved. If it's a film, we want to send them out of the cinema talking about the characters and the world we created.
Especially when you've been commissioned to write that film because that really is the ultimate gift as a writer - to be trusted with someone's idea, to make it magical, to make it breathe....
Scenes From a Memory is just that. Commissioned by the director, Nicolas Courdouan; a wonderful and original idea that wanted to be a feature film.
And here's the even better news: I delivered the first draft a few weeks ago and he loved it. So now I am in the middle of the joyful task of tweaking, layering a little and improving it in draft 2.
But if you want a taste of what this very talented director can do, have a look at the page for the short film he has just shot, Radha

THANK YOU from the All Thumbs team...
We had wonderful audiences for ALL THUMBS; audiences small and full houses; quiet laughers and loud chortlers, you made the two week run of All Thumbs awesome for us.
And, given we were in the International Bar, it was only right that our audience should have been truly international. We had people from Brazil, Mexico, Portugal, America, South Africa, Hong Kong and Taiwan, from Kilkenny and Wexford, London and Macclesfield...
We met people we haven't seen for a while and once-strangers we really hope to meet again.
THANK YOU. One and all!
And a massive thank you to everyone who helped us get All Thumbs up: the Attic Studio, where it had its first reading last year, John, James and all in the International Bar for giving us their lovely venue and being unwaveringly helpful, to Tamar Keane for helping with production, to Donogh MacCarthy-Morrogh & Lochlainn McKenna of StormLight for the promo, to Pamela Lockey for poster and programme design, to Jane McCarthy for Front of House, to Libby Sedgwick and very especially to the AMAZING Julie Lockey for bringing my strange little script and the lovely Lena to life!

WONDERFUL reviews and audience response for All Thumbs....
ONLINE REVIEWS for
ALL THUMBS...
"...the overall performance is utterly engaging and
charming. Like talking to a crazed stranger at a bus stop, the viewer is unsure
whether to pull away or let Lena carry on with her crazed tale, afraid of where
it might end up. Simply put, All Thumbs is quirky, light and fun, and that in
itself deserves two thumbs up."
"...All Thumbs is filled with... positivity,
laughter and humour that will get you through the rest of the day and
beyond! Sedgwick’s easy to understand and to follow writing together with
Lockey’s wonderful ability to portray a character in such a natural way makes
this play easy to engage with and to enjoy....It’s a one woman show where one
brilliant actress does an amazing job with the limited resources, stage wise,
that she has. Going back to the basics of storytelling, Lockey’s charming and,
at times, even saucy Lena will stick in your memory long after the play is
over.
So, give All
Thumbs a thumbs up! And don’t miss this little gem in the
very heart of Dublin, running until March 12th.
"Julie Lockey gives Lena a good sense of comic timing,
expressions that are knowing, and at times counter to Sedgwick's direct, well
written lines. Comedy is something Locke does well, giving a serious, yet
quirkiness, to Lena that makes sense; she talks to thumbs after all, and by the
time it arrives, it doesn't feel odd. Watching Locke work, giving a feeling of
odd Victoria Wood type characters, there was a sense that taking on a Willy
Russell role might be an intriguing step."

Lindsay Jane Sedgwick has done it again! ALL THUMBS is hilarious with funny and fast-paced writing about an impossibly daft situation. Julie Lockey is perfect in the role of Lena - the woman who stole a thumb. It is definitely a must-see. I am still smiling, several hours later! Go and see it! - NL

All Thumbs gets audience's thumbs and larynx's laughing
First night last night in the International Bar and the place was full - about 25% of the house found us online on one of the 'what's on' websites, which is fantastic and bodes well. But even better was the laughter. From a few seconds in, it was just there, spilling through the space.
I am so lucky to have found Julie Lockey for this piece. She has such brilliant comic timing and instinct that she took the material and the audience and wrapped them round her... thumb, I guess!
But before it all kicked off, StormLight were in the venue. Directors Donogh MacCarthy-Morrogh and Lochlainn McKenna spent the afternoon shooting scenes from the play, all sorts of angles and attitudes were assumed and eyebrows and thumbs were wriggled suggestively. The purpose - a short promo for which vox pops were gathered at the end of the show.
We should have that online tomorrow, if not tonight! Can't wait to see it.
As for Julie, I think - though she may be still asleep at the moment I'm writing this - that she can't wait to get back up on the stage in the International Bar and perform again!
Some pic follow of the afternoon's filmshoot. The show runs every night Monday to Friday until the 11th March at 7pm sharp. (The Comedy Cellar are in after us so we have to be prompt.) It's also on lunchtimes at 1pm from tomorrow Weds 2nd to Sat 5th and from the 7th to the 12th March (Mon to Sat) all next week. Bookings can be made by phone +353 86 166 3363/ allthumbsplay@gmail.com. Tickets cost 10 Euro. (Concession 8 euro)

ALL THUMBS on deck... One week to opening night..
Poster design by Pam Lockey |
A slightly twisted comedy about love... and thumbs.
One particular thumb.
One particular thumb.
A very particular thumb.
In a jar.
And Lena, she was minding her own business.
In a jar.
And Lena, she was minding her own business.
She had work to do, cleaning the lab, night after night....
But love stories never begin the way you expect them to...
... and Lena was never one to waste an opportunity...
My new play, ALL THUMBS opens in the International Bar, 23 Wicklow Street, Dublin 2
on Feb 29th, running until March 12th. It's the story of a under-appreciated, hot blooded
woman who steals a thumb from a lab, grows a man and keeps him hostage.
Like I said. A love story.
Small wonder many of my friends and associates wonder about me!
It runs on a variety of dates:
29 Feb - 4th March and 7th March - 11th March (ie Monday to Friday ) at 7pm....
And from 2-5th March (Weds to Sat) and 7 - 12th March (Mon to Sat) at 1pm.
The International Bar itself is listed as one of the top ten pubs in the whole of
Dublin... great atmosphere; a deeply historic and unspoilt pub. There will be special
deals such as soup and a sandwich for a fiver for those attending the show.

And this is the amazing Julie Lockey who has taken hold of
my script, throttled it kindly, won it over - it was hers from
the minute she read it - and who, from Feb 29th at 7pm, will
bring my lovely Lena to life. Facebook/allthumbsplay; on twitter @allthumbsplay or #allthumbsplay.

REVIEWS FOR PAST PLAYS BY Lindsay Jane Sedgwick
A bit about me. Determined to be a playwright from a young age. First really really bad play written when I was 16. Since then, things have improved. Now officially an award-winning playwright and screenwriter with 13 productions of stage plays that include the Focus Theatre, Smock Alley, Theatre Upstairs, Waterside (Derry), Cork Arts Theatre and BBC Radio 4.
Possibly best known in the screenwriting field of the creation of PUNKY, an animation series which broke new ground globally simply because the main character was a child with Down's syndrome. (Played wonderfully by Aimee Richardson)

"The two characters are portrayed with remarkable skill by Karen Connell, who conveys
the neurotic core of Eloise and the sensuous indulgence of Lulu with beautiful understatement.
A lot of credit must go to the careful staging, directed by the author, Lindsay Jane Sedgwick."

audience for its 60 minute running time. This is, beneath the surface, a complex tale of
how we either consciously or unconsciously deal with trauma and the impact it can have
on our lives."
- David Keane, The Public Reviews
"This slow-paced, deeply emotional and very organic play tells us a story of “two selves”.
The last piece of the season is surely going to be one of the most memorable ones."
- Yana Patrakova, Unforgettable Lines
"The writing is powerful, the subject matter gripping, and the performance by Karen
Connell is winsome and compulsive. A brave and engaging piece of theatre, do yourself
a favour and take some time to see it."
- Caroline Farrell, The Librarian's Cellar

ALL THUMBS on deck... One week to opening night...

Now officially an award-winning playwright and screenwriter with 13 productions of stage plays that include the Focus Theatre, Smock Alley, Theatre Upstairs, Waterside (Derry), Cork Arts
Theatre and BBC Radio 4.
Possibly best known in the screenwriting field of the creation of PUNKY, an animation series which broke new ground globally simply because the main character was a child with Down's syndrome. (Played wonderfully by Aimee Richardson)

FRIED EGGS: Theatre Upstairs; Aug 11-22nd 2015
"The two characters are portrayed with remarkable skill by Karen Connell, who conveys
the neurotic core of Eloise and the sensuous indulgence of Lulu with beautiful understatement.
A lot of credit must go to the careful staging, directed by the author, Lindsay Jane Sedgwick."
